Pet Baths & Nail Trimming
Keeping up with your cat or dog nail trimming and bathing your pet is an important part of that. Here at Lynn Animal Hospital, we offer pet nail trimming and baths for your furry friends and are here to help them maintain excellent hygiene!
The Benefits of Pet Baths
Gets rid of dirt and odor
Many dogs are bound to get a little dirty from their everyday activities–like playing outside, walks, chasing squirrels–you name it! Bathing your dog regularly will help manage stinky odors and keep them fresh and clean.
Supports Skin and Coat Health
Regular baths help prevent skin irritations and infections. Alongside parasite prevention medication for your dog and cat, it can also be extra assurance that you’re doing your best to stop them from contracting parasites and worms!
Reduces Shedding and Helps with Allergies
Bathing your dog or cat will eliminate loose hair, pet dander, and dead skin cells–and will help keep your home cleaner in the long term!
Do Cats Need Baths Too?
Cats are generally great at self-grooming and don’t need regular baths. However, it’s a good idea to consider getting your cat bathed in the following situations:
Long-haired Cat Breeds
Cats with long hair may need occasional baths to prevent matting and maintain the health of their coat.
Skin Health Conditions
Cats who can’t groom themselves (due to feline arthritis, for example) may need regular baths. If your pet has a specific skin condition or sensitivity, talk to one of our veterinarians about what they advise regarding caring for your cat’s hygiene.
Accidents
If your cat has a bathroom accident or gets into something smelly, sticky, or potentially toxic, it's recommended that their fur and skin be thoroughly cleaned to prevent future issues.
How Often Should I Bathe My Dog?
Generally, a healthy dog with no skin problems doesn’t need to be bathed very often– think every two to three months. However, there are a few important factors to consider.
Dog Breed And Coat Type
It’s not just about coat length—some short-haired breeds need more frequent bathing than you might expect! That said, it’s best for long and curly-haired dogs to bathe every four to six weeks.
Activity Level
If your dog is active and spends a lot of time outside, more frequent baths are recommended!
Allergies And Skin Conditions
If your pet has allergies or another skin condition, they may need medicated shampoo. One of our veterinarians will happily partner with you and help you find a shampoo suitable for your furry friend’s needs!
Please consult one of our veterinarians for the best bathing schedule and products for your pet. Remember, not all bathing products are created equal, and bathing your dog too much can be harmful to them.
Why is trimming my dog or cat’s nails important?
It’s recommended that you get your dog or cat’s nails trimmed at least once a month. However, some dogs' and cats’ nails grow quicker and may need theirs cut more frequently. Cutting them yourself can be tricky, so come in to see us for a pet nail trim!
