In addition to physical examination, diagnostic services help to give doctors a more complete picture of the health of your pet. This includes exposure to parasites, health of internal organs, and evidence of infectious disease. We use both in-house laboratory equipment as well as trusted reference laboratories to give us the most accurate information available.
The most common laboratory services used are fecal examinations. Most parasites are spread by licking parasite eggs from the ground or their own feet. It is recommended that each pet have a fecal sample checked yearly or whenever there are problems with the gastrointestinal system. The doctor recommends more frequent checks if your pet is exposed to other animals in dog parks, public parks, apartment common grounds, and other high animal traffic areas. Cats should not be forgotten if they spend any time outside and are exposed to an uncontrolled environment. But even indoor cats can have parasite exposure from things that you bring into your home from the outside, including your own shoes.
